On Marriage
When someone dies, we greive. We greive for our own loss, not for the suffering of the person who has passed. We have an extravagant funeral ritual about someone who isn't alive to appreciate it. We do no have it for the dead, we have it for ourselves, the living...
In much that same spirit, I feel that when we marry, we marry for the rest of the world to see. There's no personal need - for the bride and groom - to marry; because we already have a knowing between us. A knowing. Marriage is an expression of our knowing. Our marriage is performed as a service to the rest of the universe, so that the universe may witness our bond and our promise to each other. It is not a fix to any problems. It is not a goal to be achieved. It is an expression.
